“Time is a vessel created to be filled, and leisure is the human’s enemy”. This is the cognitive image of time according to Imam Ibn Badis, which is not a “sword” nor is it made of “gold” as commonly described in classical Arabic literature, nor is it “money” as depicted in English and Western proverbs in general”. This is because time is neutral, and its value is shaped by “human deeds”. The image of “the sword” is a symbol of “hostility, anticipation and fear” of time, as it may cut you if you do not cut it.
The image of “money and gold” is closest to a purely materialistic perspective, which is a motivating image to acquire it. Losing it represents the loss of money and gold, while obtaining it indicates wealth and prosperity. On the thresholds of this world view, the human essence is lost, the dimension of faith evaporates, and there remains no moral significance except what is justified by the end as means, and what is invoked by positive philosophy -something that can be tangible and calculated.
However, the depiction of “filling” is the interpretive image to the concept of “favor” as mentioned in the Holy Hadith. Favor itself only gains significance when attributed to “the most benefactor”; who is Allah, the Glorified and Exalted. Then, considering how it is received by the “recipient of the blessing”, meaning the human beings. If the latter is grateful, he is worthy of it, however, if he shows ingratitude, severe punishment from Allah will befall him: “And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): “If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; But if ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed.”.
